Winter student-athletes come together to celebrate the start of the winter season. Men's and women's basketball teams scrimmages and the wrestling team wrestled short matches.

“They're very motivational,” Lincoln Isom said, a sophomore wrestler.  Isom finds that wrestling is one of the most organized sports. Blue day helped him go live and get a feel for his team this year.  He said that coach Sam Martin brought him a lot of inspiration.  He finds a lot of motivation from his teammates and from the environment wrestling has made for him.

“It was a good way to show off the winter sports,” Elizabeth Tavares said, a sophomore on the JV girl's basketball team. She found it really helpful to see the number of students in the student section cheering the girl's teams on. Tavares noticed some skills she would like to better improve over the season.

“I'd like to get my offense a bit better,” Tavares said.

Blue day allows athletes like Tavares to have a more formal scrimmage before playing their first game of the season.

“I love it, whatever you put into it you get out of it,” Sophomore wrestler, Jessica Cottings said. Cottings enjoyed watching her teammates wrestle. She wishes it could have been a longer event for the wrestling team and wished Blue day would have been advertised more.

“Fuji and Martin inspire me to wrestle,” Cottings said. She finds that having a mindset of wanting to be at practice and trying her best each practice makes it a lot more exciting for her to be in practice and on the mat.

Blue day starts with a meeting between the athletic director and the parents of winter athletes at 5:30. At six, student-athletes play their sport in a small showcase. MNary's wrestling team put 2 girls up against each other for a match and had two men's matches. Basketball players did their games and then wrestlers set up the mats. That took about 20 minutes. McNary's girl's basketball teams scrimmage for six minutes for two games and so does the men's team. The student-athletes were supported by parents and peers during their games. Athletes were also served dinner and so were parents who showed up to the meeting.
