What is Avid?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID students are determined to go to college and to make a better future for themselves. AVID teaches skills and behaviors in order to achieve academic success, and also provides intensive peer support through tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships. We create a positive peer environment for students and that drives development towards a sense of hope and personal determination.

History

McNary High School first implemented AVID in 2008 with one section of the AVID elective class.

We now have ten sections of the AVID Elective serving over 270 students. In addition, AVID strategies, including WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading), are used schoolwide, so all students learn skills that will help them not only in their classes but also in their future college and career paths.

College and Acceptance

Our students strive every day to be the best they can be. They work hard for their future and it really shows. Here are just a few of our Celts from the class of 2017 that worked hard to be accepted to some of Oregon’s top Colleges as well as out of state ones.

They are off to the next chapter of their life and it was all possible with the help and support of fellow AVID peers. Each year, 100% of our McNary AVID seniors are accepted to a 4-year college.
