The 2022-23 powder puff game has concluded and the players and man-leaders may be bruised and sore but also full of school spirit.

The seniors came out on top with 33-6, putting up a tough game against the juniors. The man-leaders brought enthusiasm throughout the whole game and gave a dazzling  performance at the halftime show.

“We were all very friendly. It was a good competition,” Senior player Caitlin Saldivar said. The seniors put up a good front for the juniors. The coaches had a good connection with the players, as they supported their teams throughout the whole game and practice.

Saldivar was put on the line a lot during the game as well as punting the ball. A small covid outbreak caused many girls to be unable to practice. As the teams were smaller they still put everything they had out on the field. “I wish we has more time to practice,” Saldivar said. Compared to previous years, practice days were down, as well as the number of girls who played during practice.

“The girls were all super great,” Junior player Jana Everitt said. Everitt scored a groundbreaking touchdown for her team. The juniors had it hard with only 13 girls on their team. “We are trying to advertise more for next year,” Everitt said. A lot of team bonding was involved in the juniors that included painting shirts and having a pizza party. There was a constent stream of support for the junior girls from not only eachother as teamates, but from their fellow peers.

“The game was fun, both teams played really hard,” Head Official Jess Auvinen said. He has been an official for nearly 22 years for the McNary Powderpuff game. He likes being an official because then he doesn't have to worry about favoritism for a certain class.

As coaching football during the powderpuff season is his norm, he gave up coaching football and is still sticking with being an official for Powderpuff. “I am overly impressed with the sportsmanship,” Auvinen said. There was no foul play. He popped into one of the team's practices and believes the teams really look forward to playing the game.

The man-leaders were on top of their routines this season. “It was fun, they worked hard,” Man-Leader coach Keile Jarnagin said. Unlike former years, the man-leaders were able to get Jarnagin up in a stunt, regardless of the fact she has never been a flyer.

“They worked really well together,” Jarnagin said.

“I feel the energy was great,” Man-leader Aiden Wilson said. Wilson helped lead the team along with the coordination throughout their performances. The team did a whole performance during the powderpuff halftime show.

“I feel half-time went well,” Wilson said. For some on the team making it to practices was difficult, they had to reteach a lot of movements to those said man-leaders.
