As students act in ways that need some attention, more staff members are closely monitoring student behavior campus-wide.

“There are some spikes in behavior that we had leading up to the second semester,” McNary’s  Principal Scott Gragg said.

“Supervision is a role of all administrators and some teachers that volunteer or are looking to be administrators themselves,” said Gragg. “We all have a role, even students have a role in sharing if they see something.” Gragg made it clear that everyone has a part to play, not just staff.

Gragg’s goal is to work proactively with students in their situations to prevent escalation of conflicts.

Last year, there were a lot of behavior issues but this is the year where administrators made some crucial decisions. “There's certain parts where it might be bigger or more than last year but overall, I think we are down,” Gragg said.

Gragg stated that community members are happy with closing campus as a result of student incidents on public properties, ultimately closing campus to keep things from getting out of control.

“Many of the incidents we see here have some connection to social media, something that was said or something that was implied or something that was perceived,” Gragg said. “It's really not a medium for conflict, it really doesn't resolve itself that way and it can actually escalate things.”

Gragg's advice to students is to be wary of what you post and to also monitor how much time you are on social media. Being conscious of how things are perceived one way versus another can be beneficial in stopping an arising conflict. “Treating other people the way that you want to be treated is a great way to mitigate that,” Gragg said.
