The Burning Sea is a 2021 Disaster film about a remote submarine operator Sofia (Kristine Kujath Thorp) who has to save Stian (Henrik Bjelland)—an oil rig worker and her SO—when he becomes trapped in a collapsing oil rig.

Rated PG-13, this film is great if you want action without guns or monsters. It is relatively short at a total of an hour and forty-five action packed minutes.

The movie uses realistic issues in today's world. Specifically issues revolving around oil rigs and the environmental effects of oil spills.

You can watch this movie by buying or renting it on Vudu, Prime Video, and Apple TV. To rent it costs $6.99 and to buy it costs $16.99.

Rotten tomatoes tomatometer rates the movie at 70% and has an audience score of 67%. Metacritic in contrast rates it at 47% and IMDb rates it at a 6.3/10.

Be warned that because the movie is made by a Norwegian company, subtitles will be needed—unless you speak Norwegian.

The tension is heightened throughout the film with the existence of Stian’s son Odin (Nils Elias Olsen). When both Stian and Sofia are both stuck on the oil rig Odin faithfully stays where he was told to by Sofia.

Another beloved character is Sofia’s coworker Arthur (Rolf Kristian Larsen). There seems to be some kind of connection between him and Sofia. That connection was never explained but was possibly the reasoning behind him sacrificing himself for her and Stian.

Stian’s friend and overseer and cousin Ronny (Anders Baasmo Christiansen) maintains his devotion to his cousin by staying with Odin and advocating for him and Sofia while they are still trapped on the oil rig.

The Burning sea keeps you wondering what else could go wrong when so many things already have. With one disaster after another it's a miracle when Sofia and Stian survive to the end.
