Staying online?

As we almost reach finals week,  the covid cases begin to increase, causing students to wonder if we will even make it to finals.

On Friday school has been canceled for the students as a way to try to have a non-student contact day. “As you all know, the Omicron COVID-19 variant is spreading rapidly. We continue to monitor staff and student absences daily and have ongoing dialogue with your associations as we navigate these challenges,” Christy Perry said.

Students have mixed feelings about no school on Friday but more for the chance that we will go back online altogether.

“I think we should,” Anji Rhodes said.

Some students found online was easier and just, in general, better than being in school. There can be more freedom as you can get your work done at more of your own pace while also being in the comfort of your own home.

Seniors seem to have different ideas about online learning.

“That’d suck, because online was more difficult for me as I found the work more complicated and hard to learn,” Cameron Gust said.

There could be a possibility that higher classmen are affected more by this since they are graduating soon and having in-person help from teachers and other staff can strongly help get to the finish line known as graduation.

Also with finals coming up some students begin to get behind in school due to getting sick. Which hopefully won’t put them too far behind and most students will be back in time for the end of semester.

Schools were originally supposed to go back online when we were at a 5% covid positive school statistic. Currently, we are at around 25 and pushing to keep schools open knowing all the challenges that occurred when we were online before.

So far we are still open though, with having a four day weekend hopefully that gives students enough time to get the rest needed to push through the semester and get caught up in classes. Also, giving time for students who were sick to get better and be back in time for this week to start.

“Going to school in person is a lot more work, and being online was just better for me all together, I was able to manage my time better as I was schooling in the comfort of my own home,” Rhodes said.

Even with students on different sides of debate whether online school is better or worse, I think most of the staff believes staying in school is better for almost everyone. As the schooling system at McNary was made originally to be taught in McNary High School.

Being in person, there is better support for all the students who then have so many more resources and staff to help them get through everyday school struggles.

Continuing to play it by ear for now McNary is going strong and will continue to push through the school year. As we have made it halfway through the year in person everyone is trying to keep it going throughout the whole year.

Finally, trying to keep the spirits up for the students and trying to give them the high school experience is something that should be strived for as students need to have that fun side of school to give them a reason to keep going.
