Black History Month is coming to an end and spring is finally coming, but did the month itself really get the representation it deserved for the community?

McNary was able to do a good job making sure that people knew that it was Black History Month. I loved seeing the different posters around the hallways, but could there have been more?

Yes, McNary doesn't have the biggest black community, but I do feel like there could have been more to the month. It's how most humans react to these types of things, wishing and regretting the way things are done and executed.

I feel like as a school community, we need to make sure that the things that are being said throughout the students are more respectful and civil. These past few years have been really messed up, especially towards black people.

The amount of disrespect and rudeness the students have is insane. I like to believe that it is just because they weren't educated on the matter properly, but in reality they are all just too stubborn to understand what has really been happening to our people.

This is why I feel like this month needed to make sure that Black History Month had a more  important representation than the years prior. I am a sophomore and I never really got to see how the month got it´s representation before here at McNary, but after the events that have happened in 2020 we learned that we could all do better as a society.

So the real question is, how could we do better? How can we spread more awareness and make sure the month gets enough recognition so that the black community can finally get a little taste of satisfaction that they have been longing for decades?

Personally, I don't think that there is a real right answer. There is, and will never be an answer that will be able to fix this entire problem. The only way we can fix this is taking it step by step.

It will be a long process of showing videos and  various Ted Talks that will slowly help fix our broken society.

Maybe one day we can live in a world where people like me don´t have to be scared of cops stopping us in our day to day lives.
