Mrs. Andrea James has a very simple philosophy, “Have fun in life.”
James is a sophomore English and senior AVID teacher here at McNary. She has been teaching here for three years. This year she is getting the chance to do something that she never got to do in high school: this year James will join the McNary theater department on stage for the musical Grease.
James is excited to get the chance to do something she’s never done before. She was in the theater during auditions and mentioned to Mr. Tom Cavanagh, the theater director, that she had never been in a show before. Cavanagh promptly asked if she wanted to be the teacher in the musical that wasn’t announced yet.
“It’s so fun!” James said. She enjoys getting to work alongside her students in a different atmosphere. “They’re all very professional.” It gives her a new way to connect to her students because now they have something knew in common. “I feel like I know them more.”
Being a high school teacher is her dream job. She loved being in high school. James enjoys the age, energy and the point of life high schoolers are in.
“I’m genuinely excited to come to work everyday,” James said. “I feel like my energy rubs off on the kids.”
She teaches several types of literature, including graphic novels, Hamlet, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Twelve Angry Men. Her favorite is Catcher in the Rye because, “Everything is so symbolic,” James said. She enjoys teaching deep literary analysis in classes.
