Even though the teaching staff won the annual Teacher vs. Seniors basketball game, for teacher Mr. Matt Murphy, it didn’t feel like victory was close until the final moments of the game.
The final score in the game was 77 – 50 with the staff beating the seniors.
“When we got a double digit lead at the end of the second half, that’s when we knew we had it,” he said.
“They were behind but they did make it interesting. They cut it close,” he said, referring to the senior team.
Murphy said the seniors were very competitive, especially Lance Bechtel. Murphy said Bechtel was an awesome opponent, presented a tough defense, and was hitting threes. Murphy guarded Bechtel along with Mr. Jordan Graneto to keep Bechtel under control.
Before the game Bechtel had high hopes for the seniors. “I believe it will be a close game down to the last minute and pull away with a victory. I think the staff are going to be really good,” Bechtel said.
Murphy joined the staff basketball game hoping to continue the teacher winning streak and to get back at some seniors who were trash talking the teacher’s abilities on the court.
“A lot of the seniors were talking smack and I had to go shut them up,” Murphy said.
“Any time I can beat young kids at something it’s a good morale booster,” Murphy said.
But all in all, a teacher and student basketball game is good for everyone involved. “It’s a lot of fun to compete against the students,” he said.
The coaches for the seniors were varsity basketball players Paige Downer and Lucas Garvey.
Downer, a senior at McNary High School, said “personally, I didn’t want to play, but when I got the chance to be coach I did. I believe that the staff team are going to be really hard to beat.”
When talking about the senior team she said, “I came into it thinking that they would be beginners, but it turned out they knew a lot about basketball. I changed up the practice since they knew a lot about basketball.”
The senior roster suffered when several football players made it to playoffs and couldn’t make the game.
The teachers also had a height advantage, with McNary Principal Mr. Erik Jespersen, Murphy, and the towering ex-NFL player, Mr. Scott Gragg on the team.
The teachers had a lot of college experience on the team, with ex-OSU forward and final four participant and McNary instructional assistant Miss Devon Hunter on the team.
For Murphy, playing on his home turf to a hostile crowd was a new experience.
“When I coach at home I’m used to cheering but here I am getting booed,” Murphy said. “Oh, it was crushing.”
This is an annual event that takes place in the fall. This year the game was on November 7th.
Maybe you will even want to play next if you feel like you have what it takes to beat the staff.
