McNary High School has had a huge teacher overhaul this school year, hiring 18 new staff members. No department got hit harder than the social studies department, with six new teachers. McNary strives to be world class and McNary principal Mr. Erik Jespersen believes the new staff is doing that well.
Mrs. Natalie Peton has taught at McNary a few times as a substitute teacher, however she has wanted to be a full time social studies teacher at McNary. Peton stepped in for Mrs. Erin Arndt as a substitute teacher at the end of the 2017-2018 school year when she left for maternity leave. Arndt now works in a middle school in Mt. Angel, Oregon, closer to her home.
“I’m so thrilled to be working here! I love McNary High School and I love the students. I’m planning on a great year,” Peton said.
Ms. Mackenzie Delong is another new social studies teacher at McNary. This is Delong’s first year of teaching. She was a student teacher last year at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon and Sherwood Middle School in Sherwood in the language arts department.
“Joining the McNary team has been a great experience. It didn’t take long or me to realize that I am joining a community that holds itself to a very high standard. Not just for students, but for teachers as well. And I know great things are happening and will continue to happen here because of that. I feel extremely lucky to be a teacher at McNary,” Delong said.
Jespersen has been the principal at McNary since 2014, “(I’m) very excited at the new teachers doing well in the classroom and showing interest in extracurricular activities in the school.” Jespersen said. The students are doing well and are engaged in class even with teachers who are new to teaching.
Hiring keeps the staff busy, “(I) think about hiring twelve months of the year,” Jespersen said. “Hiring mainly takes place in the spring, but by then I’ve usually met the person being hired.” The amount of new staff hired fluxuates year to year.
