Muggle Quidditch is a real life version of the fictional sport Quidditch, from Harry Potter. Some people at McNary have been trying to get a Muggle Quidditch at McNary. One of these students is Alan Torres, a freshman.
“I first heard about Quidditch a while back in the 4th grade. I made a version of it in my backyard, and later in middle school I started researching about it and I found a league where they have their own college teams. I was doing this stuff, and I thought that it sounded really fun and in a school of 2000 I thought I could find other people who would play it too,” said Alan.
Alan has been a fan of Harry Potter since he was little. Although some things stay the same, there are a lot of differences between Muggle Quidditch and Quidditch.
“Well they have pretty similar rules, we don’t fly on brooms obviously, so we have to have a broom between our legs when we run, and instead of a giant metal ball we have dodge balls. The hoops are a lot smaller and shorter, the tallest one is two meters high. Another difference is that the snitch doesn’t come in until 18 minutes into the game, and instead of a flying ball with wings, because that doesn’t exist, there is a snitch runner that is not on either team that has a tennis ball in a sock,” said Alan. The four positions in Muggle Quidditch are the chasers, beaters, seeker, and the keeper.
“The chasers’ job is to score points for the team by kicking or throwing a volleyball into the other team’s hoop, of course if they get hit by a dodgeball they have to run back to their hoop. The beaters’ job is to throw dodgeballs at the other team to get them out of play, and they have to go back and touch their hoop to get back in. The keeper’s job is to protect the the hoops so the other team’s chasers can not score. The seeker’s job is to get the snitch,” Mrs. Sharon Torres said , a testing specialist at McNary. Torres is the advisor for the Muggle Quidditch team.
“The very first meeting we had one person came, and then we did a lot more advertising and announcements and a total of 15 people came and the next one and four people registered. At this time we have a total of six team members and regulations say we have to have seven people on the team because you need seven people on the field, “ said Sharon. The only other high school team in the country is in Louisiana, but there is a community team up in Portland. The Muggle Quidditch team is considering talking to other schools in the Salem-Keizer district about joining too.
