On Wednesday, May 18, McNary was lucky enough to have Mrs. Cory Jewell Jensen, M.S. come and give a presentation on recognizing sex offenders and on the types of sex crimes to students. Jensen, a long time friend of Mr. Doug Parker, the Youth and Law and government teacher here at McNary, came to give a presentation to the Youth and Law students that could attend, as well as any other students interested, during sixth period.
Jensen talked about what sex offenders look act like, how they present themselves, and the ways in which you might better recognize them. She used personal stories from her job, working with these offenders in rehabilitation type facilities, to help students get a feel of first hand accounts and the attitudes many offenders have. Using multiple videos of real life offenders who volunteered to be videotaped and interviewed (some even in prison), she gave students a first hand look at the real people.
Jensen goes around the country teaching a version of this class to law enforcement officers, school officials, and, even coaches. She even travels to other countries, going to Finland in the winters.
