Mr. Sean Smith will fill in the role left by Mr. Matthew Osberg as McNary’s girls tennis coach this year.
Mr. Smith is a special education teacher. This is his first year at McNary although he’s previously taught at McKay and has coached girls’ tennis for both McKay and West Salem.
Smith has been playing tennis since he was 5-years-old. He played tennis for three years when he was in high school in Arizona and his team even won the state championship while he was there (Although Smith says this was mainly due to his teammates).
Smith says his goal for this year is to develop a good program. He wants to get as many athletes as he can, including athletes who’ve never played tennis before. He’s shooting for between 40 and 45 players.
This change follows the graduation of some of McNary’s top tennis players such as Katherine Perez who got 5th at districts last year, and Hannah Childress who got 2nd at districts and top 8 at state last year.
Because of this, Smith says this will be a rebuilding year, with a goal of getting new players to learn tennis and have fun.
