After a multiple year hiatus, the McNary High School dance team has begun once again.
The official name of the team is The McNary Celtic Dance Team.
The team has about 10 people on it. Coach Lindsey started the dance team for a second time. ¨Basically we all worked to get it started again,¨ said sophomore, Ashlee Ellis.
The dance team members put a good amount of time and effort to practice on their own time.
¨We rehearse about three times a week, or sometimes we’ll have weekend practices.¨
The team practices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the team has recently started meeting after school on Fridays.
There are many categories that the dance team could fit into, ¨I would categorize it as a sport and an art because you get to have fun with it, but also we compete,” Ellis said.
“I would say it’s a sport, it’s pretty hard. We do arms, legs, and core,” said sophomore Breanna Hofmann. She later added, “we really do have to have muscle to do the stuff and flexibility.”
Participating in the dance team could be a distraction from the bad things, maybe, a hobby, etc.
For Ellis, it is very fun. She plans on returning to the team next year. Hofmann also said she would also participate in the dance team for the coming year.
The coaches who run the dance team are coach Lindsey, coach Sarah, and coach Cierra. The team also has three captains, which are Hofmann, Analina Direzze, and Alivia Hall.
To get into the dance team there are clinics, which then lead to tryouts. One day they learn the dance/choreography. The next day, people come in and judge the participants. Tryouts will be held in May
This year, about two or three people got cut, but the team needs at least four girls to be able to compete.
Ellis and Hofmann have had a couple years of experience in dancing. “I think I’ve been dancing for a couple years now,” said Ellis. “Before all of this I danced for six years,” said Hofmann. However, Hofmann did say she had dropped dancing for four years, but with the dance team’s revival, she took the opportunity of dancing again.
The McNary Celtic Dance Team will be competing on Saturday, February 9 at West Linn High, Saturday, February 23 at Sprague High School, Saturday, March 2 at Thurston High School, and the State Competition at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland on Friday, March 15.
As well as competitions, the dance team will be entertaining the school with their participation at our assemblies.
