The McNary boys’ soccer team finished off their non-conference half of the season with a home game against the undefeated Gresham Gophers. At the end of a long, defensive struggle, McNary came away with a 1-0 victory on Monday, September 17.
With 7:16 left in the first half, Senior Jesus Lopez (#20) scored the first goal of the game.
The game was very back and forth. One team would take the ball, they would pass up the field and get close to the goal, then the other team’s defense would steal the ball, and the process would repeat.
A number of steals included Junior Isaiah Petilo’s (#16) rising kick to intercept a high flying Gresham pass. An interception by Junior Luis Lopez Alvarez (#8). A number of catches from McNary’s goalkeeper, Junior Alejandro Villarreal. And two last minute slides to prevent near walk-in goals from Jesus Lopez. In total the first half had only three shots from McNary and four from Gresham, and McNary was leading 1-0.
The second half continued the defensive battle. The defenses were more aggressive including another brilliant save from Lopez about halfway through the half. Over the entire half, McNary only attempted one more shot and Gresham attempted three, all of which were saved.
McNary held on to their 1-0 lead for the entire half, and when the clock finally expired, the Celtics had emerged victorious.
