On Jan. 30, The McNary boys basketball team played against Sprague. The Celts took a win with the score of 56 to 49.
One of the boys on the team, Kyler Rodriguez said, “Favorite part of this game? The energy that we had the whole time. Definitely, yeah and the energy that we had on the bench and the court and maintaining our mental stability.”
Kylar was most proud of the team when the team got better looks for baskets and and even though he didn’t score much, he was proud he was able to share the ball with the team for a better score.
“Usually in most of our games we won, like our past six games by one point, well not our past six but you know what I mean. But, you know just having them be close games in the end is a little bit stressful but we’ve been in them for the past four games so we know what to expect and how to play but I still think that’s the most stressful.”
During the game against Sprague, both teams were taking the lead going back and forth. The score was close and caused much stress for the team.
This game taught the team to push through and go their hardest. According to Kylar Rodriguez, many people didn’t think they would win five games and now they have a winning ratio of 5:1 for league games and overall of 12:4.
Gunner Smedema said, “I think the most struggling part for us was when little Max[Sprague teammate], number four, started getting his rhythm and we started to struggle a little bit on defense by just letting them go straight to the rim but then coach pulled us aside and talked about how we just need to have a good defense and we stopped them.”
Ryan Kirch, the head coach, said , “We struggled a bit in the third quarter taking care of the ball. After a timeout we regained our composure and was able to take back the lead. I thought we finished with great focus and intention.”
When the team struggled, the coach pulled the team aside and was able to pull the team together for a strong finish.
