Thursday the curtains will open on McNary’s production of Grease.
The play takes plays at Rydell High in the 1950’s and follows the romance of “greaser” Danny Zuko, played by senior Steven Cummings, and “good girl” Sandra ‘Sandy’ Dumbrowski (who fans of the movie will know as Sandy Olsson), played by junior Ingrid Dunn.
“Danny’s cool and interesting,” said Cummings. “I‘m not cool, but by playing Danny I get to learn the coolness. Plus it’s cool to wear a leather jacket,” he joked.
All the plays leads are filled by McNary students including the “Pink Ladies”, the coolest girls in the school: Betty Rizzo, played by senior Veronica Reyes; Frenchy, played by senior Rachel Herriges; Jan, played by senior Alixandra Andersen; and Marty, played by senior Kennadi Thomas.
The leads also include the “Burger Palace Boys”, Danny’s group of greasers: Kenickie, played by senior Jacob Fritts; Doody, played by junior Layton Thurlow; Sonny, played by sophomore Crash Diarmit; and Roger (who fans of the movie will know as Putzie), played by junior Richard Galvin.
Diarmit, the only underclassman with a leading role, described playing Sonny. “He’s supposed to be the funny guy,” said Diarmit. The role, “gives me the freedom to be. I can try.” Diamit said comedic roles are his favorite because he can try and be funny or he can try and be serious and it still fits the character.
The play is primarily lead by theatre teacher Mr. Tom Cavanaugh. However, he has help from other staff members as well including McNary music teachers Mr. Joshua Rist, Mr. Andy Thomas, and Mr. Sean Williams as well as McNary English teacher Miss Andrea James, who plays Rydell’s English teacher Miss Lynch.
The play will run Thursday through Sunday both this week and next week. Tickets can be purchased here.
