This year’s girls basketball team is ready for the season. There are three teams, varsity, JV, and JV2. There are about 12 girls on each team. During tryouts, Coach Derick Handley said he and the other coaches were looking for girls that have the potential for growth, have good character, put in effort, and are going to be coachable.
Handley has high hopes for all the teams. For varsity, his goal is to get a league title. He hopes they can replace South, who won a state title last year. For JV, he hopes that they will win more games than last year. For JV2, he wants all the girls to improve.
This year there are 2 freshman and 3 seniors on varsity. Handley said “the seniors are really stepping up this year.”
Handley has been coaching at McNary for two years. Before that, he coached at Mckay and North.
One piece of advice he gives is “go 100% the entire game or practice.”
By playing and coaching basketball, Handley has learned that “every game has it’s ups and downs. It’s never as bad as it seems, but it’s also never as good as it seems.”
Freshman Anita Lao, on varsity, said that “basketball taught me how to work with other people, build relationships, and stay in shape.”
