Star athlete Haley Hughes is involved in five different sports here at McNary, including but not limited too, football, lacrosse and track.
Hughes, a junior at McNary High School, got her interest in football from watching her younger brothers play.
Hughes got inspired to play football by her dad, Coach Kyle Hughes. Her dad played football in college and has been involved in football in some way ever since. “My dad and my whole family probably has been that main influence for [joining the football team],” Hughes said.
Hughes said that she enjoys it so much that she wants to do it next year and hopes to do it in future too. “I definitely want to do football,” Hughes said.
Hughes said that she has learned to be and act more like a team and how to just be there for her teammates. “My teammates taught me that whole team aspect and playing for each other and being a team,” Hughes said.
Hughes said that she enjoys football outside of school as much as she does any other sport.
Football has changed Hughes in a way that she’s not afraid to be herself or to get out there. “I motivated myself to get out there and do it,” Hughes said. “I think the football team has changed me in a way, that I’ve kind of just been out there more, and stand out and just do what I want to do no matter what anybody else says.”
Kyle, Hughes’ dad and wide receiver coach, enjoyed having his daughter on the team. He said that she’s learned a lot and has improved so much this season. “I used to coach her in soccer and other sports before high school so it’s been fun to be her coach again,” Kyle Hughes said.
“She has definitely become a more well rounded athlete,” he said. “Her kicking leg has become much stronger and it even helped her in the Powder Puff game scoring only touchdowns for juniors.”
Hughes plays varsity soccer right now but it has not ever interfered with football. “The only thing would be getting injured and being out of football and soccer.”
Hughes is also involved in swim, track, and lacrosse, and she really enjoys it because she loves sports and she manages her time well.
She has lettered in five different sports at McNary and still has a 4.0 GPA in honors and AP classes.
She said that it is not difficult living with Haley while being her coach.
Kyle has been coaching her sports since she was five and they respect each other very much and get along well on the field and at home.
“She is the best daughter a dad can ask for,” Kyle said.
