Attention teachers and students, as we all know there is going to be construction here at McNary starting is August and that will go for the next 18 months.
This is what Scott Gragg, the assistant principal had to say about it. “The short answer is that we are going to have construction everywhere, construction will be taking place is phase one we are doing a lot of Seismic upgrades all around the school. For example west hall they’ll be digging down inside that hall to reinforce and somehow re-construct the foundation of those walls to better insure that the school will be safe if a large earthquake would happen to occur.”
“The west hall isn’t apart of the construction. Phase one is part of the first summer they will be doing a lot of staging they will begin a lot of the seismic activities so that week can have school here next year,” he said.
“Phase two is where will be adding a lot of our additions are going to happen or major additions such as The north end of campus have a lot more classrooms bigger classrooms and a diesel tech bay and a weight room and at the same time there’ll be an extension for performing arts with a orchestra and are other music related classes. The office will no longer be there it will be replaced for classrooms and that’ll happen during the school year next year. Phase three is finishing up what they didn’t do in phase one and phase two.”
Mr. Heimerdinger’s and Mr. Layton’s rooms, the weight room, the testing lab, and the geometry in construction lab are all going to be affected. These areas are where most of the construction will be taking place. Other rooms like Mr. Keeker’s will no longer be a room, instead they will be a hallway for the north expansion.
The tennis courts will be moved over by Chemawa Street, the softball fields will eventually move over to a new space as well.
As of right now they are estimating that a quarter other teachers and staff will be relocated to a new space next year.
“This is a team effort everybody well all be helping out chipping in anyway they can. Yes there are some times set aside for teachers to move that has in the past been used for teacher development and we are setting aside some time to relocate and declutter rooms and take personal items home.” Gragg said.
The construction will impact teachers and students.
“I think that we all have a little level of concern for everyone Who is going to be involved in impacted by this.I think something that we all need to focus on is the end result because it will be a good thing for the school and it’ll change your inability to reduce class-size you’re also bear in ability to do state of the art things. I think we’ve given teachers a time frame that they need to get the things out like fridges and microwaves and things like that where if there are any delays and I’ll just push the construction back which will make the end time further away,” Gragg said, “Everyone at McNary always does a good job at making sure that we are successful.”
The teachers will not know who is moving until February.
