Chess has been a game that has stood the test of time, since its approximate invention in the sixth century.
At present day McNary High School there is one club that honors the legacy of this ageless classic, the Chess Club.
They play chess, have tournaments, and most of all, make friendships.
Everyone seems to have an equal part to play in the club, which is run by students Allen Torres, Emmanuel Licona and Adam Graneto. The number of members on the club fluctuates from week to week. They get about an average of six or seven people per week, but they have 22 people actually signed up for the current chess championship.
According to Graneto, they do not teach strategies for chess, as they have the idea by the more you play chess, the more a person can learn and develop their own strategy. Graneto said that they do not play major variations from chess except regular chess, and speed chess (chess with timers).
But this is not at all a bad thing. Chess is very simple to learn over its other variations. And yes, there are other variations of chess. There is 4-player chess, which literally means four players can play chess in the same game. A typical game of that goes for 1.5 hours on average.
According to Torres, he says they will play minor variations, like they will change one rule and play that way. But this does not happen often
Graneto said that “chess I think is a lot of fun, because it’s completely about skill, there is no luck involved in it, and all you have to know is how to play it in order to play it.” Licona said “I think as to why it’s a long-standing game not only it is simple once you get down to it but also because it has a very low skill-flooring, and a very high skill-ceiling, in the way that predicting the enemy won’t always go the way you plan and they could surprise you.” It’s simple to learn, but hard to master, and it’s available almost anywhere.
Graneto and Torres both agreed that the King is the most important chess piece of the game, as they are King is the one that needs to be defended. But Licona said the knight was in fact the most important piece as it has the most unique movement of all the chess pieces. And if used right can put a real beat down on the enemy.
