Wednesday, February 6, David Allen and Tyler Covalt, two of McNary’s top baseball players, signed letters of intent to fulfill their dreams of playing baseball in college. Next year Allen will be playing for Pacific University and Covalt will be playing for Umpqua Community college.
McNary baseball head coach, Mr.Larry Keeker, had good things to say about both players. Keeker called Covalt and Allen good students who represent McNary well.
He praised Covalt for the amount of time and dedication he’s put into baseball, and said that Wednesday he signed on to fulfill his dream of playing baseball in college, and the signing was an event for his friends and family to share that dream. Covalt has played catcher for McNary for three years in a row and even earned a spot on first team all district.
Keeker said Allen is a bit different than Covalt. While Covalt is energetic and emotional, Allen is calm, reserved, and confident, all of which help him on the mound as a starting pitcher and keep him from getting rattled. He said Allen has put effort in taking lessons as a pitcher and a hitter and that it’s earned him a chance to fulfill his dream and represent McNary in college.
Covalt thanked everyone for helping him achieve his scholarship, particularly his family, and that he remembers every day of baseball like it was yesterday.
Allen thanked Mr. Scott Gragg, McNary’s athletic director, for setting up the signing and his friends for their support over the years.
Covalt and Allen both have one more year of baseball before college however. Allen and Covalt will help lead the McNary team in Beaverton when they open their season against the debuting Mountainside Mavericks on March 13.
