June 15, 2016 By:Hunter Watson
Students from McNary High School beat the odds. Chance Cross, Alicia Capuchine, Miriam Henifin, Harkiran Dhamin, Alexis Garcia, and Fallon Dunham are a great example of those students who pursue higher education even though they are the first in their family. Yes, these students are first generation students to attend college.
Some parents did not have the opportunity to attend college. Others might have been forced to work due to low-income and other might have just not had the support. Many of these students had no knowledge on how to get to college but through support they achieved their goal. These students had support from teachers, family, and friends. They know that they need a better education to have a better life.
Chance Crosby will be attending College of the Ozark in Missouri. Chance will get his bachelor’s in Pre-Veterinarian.
“The people who drove me were my parents, family, and friends. The reason why I will attend college is to better my life and pursue ultimate happiness.”
For Alicia Capuchine her family has alway been her motivation as well. Seeing her family struggle financially and her brothers doing bad choices made her want a better future for herself and her future family. Alicia’s mom is a big part of her life because she motivates her and gives her the confidence she need. Her mom tells her she was born for greatness and Alicia wants to prover her right and make her mom realize her own greatness. Nobody in her family has attended college and she will be the first of 7 children to do so. Alicia will attend Western Oregon University and study Business Finance and Accounting.
“…College will be the first step to making something great of myself. For my mom.”
Attending University of Oregon, Miriam Henifin hopes to discover her dream career. Miriam is excited to be in a different setting with lots of new opportunities to explore. Miriam has also been motivated by her parents and teacher. She thinks that attending college is necessary.
“I want to make sure I get a job that will allow me to provide enough for myself and my family.”
Also attending U of O, Harkiran Dhami hopes to study Business. Her family has aways pushed her to do her best and make sure she works hard to have a better life.
“College is a way to give me a higher chance of getting a good job.”
Alexis Garcia will attend Linn-Benton Community College and study Zoology. Her motivation is also her family and teachers. She wants to pursue her dream job as a Marine Life Veterinarian.
“I want to make my parents proud.”
