Celtic Announcements for 6/7/13

The last Do Good Lottery Winner of the Year is ---Alyssa Andretta!  She wins a $25 Gift Card Courtesy of Target at Keizer Station.  A big Thank You goes out to all McNary’s “Do Gooders”, keep it up over the summer and next year we’ll be back.  Please thank Amy Romero and Michelle Cummings for all of the hard work on this project this year.   

 

The first Celtic Starter Training is after the 7th period final on Wednesday.  This meeting takes place in room 53 and is required for anyone interested in participating in Freshman Orientation next year.  Come to Heimerdinger’s room, 53, for the meeting or if you have any questions. 

 

Do something good this summer, Habitat for Humanity is currently hiring for a Youth Construction Trainer for eight weeks during the summer. This is a great way to help your community, learn some great skills and earn high school credit. Please stop by the Student Connection Center for more information.

 

Members of the Flash Fiction Club (led by Eric Howald of Keizertimes) have just published their second compilation, The Music of the Silent. This masterpiece has almost 70 pages of writing--poetry and prose--and artwork by several McNary students.  Signed copies are for sale for $16.

 

Attention all athletes: It's time to dig through your car, sports bags, and under the bed. Training room supplies that were checked out during the year need to be turned back in to Jill this week. The list of items not returned has been given to the bookkeeper.

                                            

Celtic Announcements for 3/5/13

The next student council meeting will be next Tuesday the 12th at 8:30 in the cafeteria.  Class reps and Club Officers need to send a representative to attend the meeting and report to the council regarding current club and student events. 

 

Attention all FBLA members that are attending the State Business Leadership Conference! There will be an FBLA meeting on Tuesday, March 12th at 2:30PM in Mrs. Gerig’s room. Please remember that attendance at these meetings is important as the State competition approaches!

 

Intramural Indoor Soccer will start in April. Teams are due to Mrs. Cleary in the gym by March 20th. Pick up a sign up sheet in the gym or room 255. Have questions? See Mrs Cleary, Mr. Everitt or Mr. Arndt.

 

Attention wrestlers: Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling practice starts today at 3:00. Practices will be Tuesday and Thursday from now through the state tournaments in April. Come out and get some experience in the international styles of wrestling. See Coach Goin or Coach Ebbs for more information.

 

The AAYLC is the African American Youth Leadership Conference held Friday, April 12 at Chemeketa Community College.  This conference promotes positive development by raising awareness in achieving personal goals, emphasizing the value of education, empowering future leadership, establishing a sense of community, increasing personal self-esteem and affirming cultural awareness.

Are you interested in attending the annual African American Youth Leadership Conference?  Stop in the Counseling Center to pick up information and a permission form.  Permission forms are due back to the Counseling Center March 14th.  This conference is open to all high school students in the Salem-Keizer School District.

 

Boys and Girls State Leadership Academy is a program sponsored by the American Legion for HS Juniors interested in government processes and leadership. The Academy will take place at Willamette University from June 16 to June 22.  Students will stay on campus during that week. You can get up to 4 college credits for participation.  Here are the requirements-

* completion of Junior year of High School by the end of the 11th grade

* must have the following qualities: leadership, character, scholarship and service to school and community

* There is a $50 non-refundable application fee

 If interested, please pick up an application from the counseling office.

Last call for anyone interested in donating hair for the Locks of Love donation happening at Friday’s assembly.  If you have 10 inches of hair you’re willing to donate to a project which creates wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy, then sign up outside Mr. Heimerdinger’s room today!

Nordstrom invites all students to apply for the 2013-2014 BP. Fashion Board.  Applications are available in the BP. department at your favorite Nordstrom store, or online at nordstrom.com.  Members will be chosen from area high schools to represent BP. and Nordstrom.  They’ll gain an inside look at the world of fashion, from merchandising and modeling to special events and promotions.

Apply today! Applications are due by March 15, 2014.

 

Calling all Celtics, listen up.  The amount of trash being dumped in the parking lot, left in the halls and on cafeteria tables is getting out of control.  Please show some pride in our school and stop the massive amounts of littering.  With only one daytime custodian on duty we need to start being more responsible before the school administration is forced to impose restrictions on our off-campus privileged or where we can eat lunch in the building. 

 

If you took “Know Your Car” last semester and participated in the Valvoline Motor Oil Basic Training Video/Test, then stop by and see Mr. Melting for your certificate.  You can find him everyday in the autoshop, room 52.

 

McNary Celtics;

Cancer Awareness month is coming up in March. We will be having an assembly on March 8 2013 for  Locks of love. We are still looking for students and or teachers to donate 10in. of non-dyed hair at the assembly March 8th Cancer Awareness Assembly.  All donors will get a free cut and style from Tangled Ends Hair Academy.  If you would like to donate your there's a sign-up sheet outside room 53.

 

Did you know there is an after school tutoring program going on in the connection center, run by Oregon College Mentors.  If you need help with any subject, or have questions about college, you can come into the Connection Center during lunches or after school from 2:30-3:30 to get help from local college students.

 

Salem-Keizer high school students have the chance to win one of four Apple products in the district’s first student video contest. The contest is sponsored by Salem-Keizer’s premier sponsor, Maps Credit Union.  The deadline to enter is March 14, 2013. Winners will be selected and announced in April.  To find contest details and find entry forms, visit www.salemkeizer.org/videocontest.

Come join us Tuesday, February 26th at 2:30 in Mrs. Stefani's room for the school-wide spelling bee!  This will be a very informal event, and winners will go on to compete at the district spelling bee to be held at Crossler Middle School on March 13th.  The district spelling bee will provide cash prizes for individual winners AND for the schools they represent. District winners will advance to the regional competition, and could ultimately compete at the statewide spelling bee!  Sound good? Sign up after school with Mr. Tanabe or Mrs. Stefani in room 137."

The Celt wrestling team lit up the competition this weekend at the Special Region 3 championship last Friday and Saturday. Seven wrestlers made the championship finals, including both wrestlers at 160 pounds, and the Celts crowned six champions, including five by pin! The champions were Louis Palos at 120, Devin Reynolds at 145, Grant Gerstner at 160, Zach Hammerschmith at 182, Cody Ratliff at 195, and Mason Ross at 220. Rob Phelps was the runner-up at 160 lbs. Also qualifying for the state tournament was Alvaro Venegas, placing fourth at 220.

 At 132 lbs, Hector Maldonado placed fifth and Caleb Connor placed 6th to wrap up McNary’s eight placers. The Celts placed second as a team.

Starting Tuesday, Feb. 12, we will be hosting tutoring sessions for Transition Students who are exiting the ELL Program for content area classes that they may be struggling with. The sessions will be every Tuesday and Thursday in Room 140 (Somerville's room) from 7am (or whenever they get off the bus/arrive) until the first bell at 7:25.  We only ask that they bring materials from those classes so we have a place to start.

 

It’s a new semester, so new lunch passes will  be required to go off campus for lunch.  You can pick up your new pass in room 156.

Unfortunately the bleachers upstairs on the West Side of the gym are not working, overflow seating for the Freshmen and Juniors will be on a special bleachers set-up on the floor on the North and South side of the gym.  Get in early and squeeze in tight to get a good seat.

 

"Do you have a knack for spelling, a love of words, or just want to test your luck? Come join us Tuesday, February 26th at 2:30 in Mrs. Stefani's room for the school-wide spelling bee!  This will be a very informal event, and winners will go on to compete at the district spelling bee to be held at Crossler Middle School on March 13th.  The district spelling bee will provide cash prizes for individual winners AND for the schools they represent. District winners will advance to the regional competition, and could ultimately compete at the statewide spelling bee!  Sound good? Sign up after school with Mr. Tanabe or Mrs. Stefani in room 137."

 

The next Student Council Meeting will be Tuesday the 19th at 8:30 in the Cafeteria.  2nd period classes will need to elect a representative to attend the meeting.  Also, each club must send a representative to the meeting to report on club events and activities. 

 

Our annual Locks of Love donation of hair will be taking place on March 8th during the Cancer Awareness Assembly, if you have at least 9 inches of hair to donate sign up outside Mr. Heimerdinger’s room for more info. 

 

Juniors and seniors! There will be a Prom meeting tomorrow after school at 2:30 in Mr. Layton's room. Prom is less than 2 months away and we could use all of the help we can get! If you're interested in helping, be there!

 

The Celt wrestling team lit up the competition this weekend at the Special Region 3 championship last Friday and Saturday. Seven wrestlers made the championship finals, including both wrestlers at 160 pounds, and the Celts crowned six champions, including five by pin! The champions were Louis Palos at 120, Devin Reynolds at 145, Grant Gerstner at 160, Zach Hammerschmith at 182, Cody Ratliff at 195, and Mason Ross at 220. Rob Phelps was the runner-up at 160 lbs. Also qualifying for the state tournament was Alvaro Venegas, placing fourth at 220.

 At 132 lbs, Hector Maldonado placed fifth and Caleb Connor placed 6th to wrap up McNary’s eight placers. The Celts placed second as a team.

 

Did you know there is an after school tutoring program going on in the connection center, run by Oregon College Mentors.  If you need help with any subject, or have questions about college, you can come into the Connection Center during lunches or after school from 2:30-3:30 to get help from local college students.

 

Starting Tuesday, Feb. 12, we will be hosting tutoring sessions for Transition Students who are exiting the ELL Program for content area classes that they may be struggling with. The sessions will be every Tuesday and Thursday in Room 140 (Somerville's room) from 7am (or whenever they get off the bus/arrive) until the first bell at 7:25.  We only ask that they bring materials from those classes so we have a place to start.

 

It’s a new semester, so new lunch passes will  be required to go off campus for lunch.  You can pick up your new pass in room 156.

 

Representatives from Chemeketa will be at McNary on Monday Feb 11th during both lunches. All seniors that stop by and fill out a contact card that day get a free lanyard.

Salem-Keizer high school students have the chance to win one of four Apple products in the district’s first student video contest. The contest is sponsored by Salem-Keizer’s premier sponsor, Maps Credit Union.  The deadline to enter is March 14, 2013. McNary FBLA members!

There will be a meeting on Monday, February 11th at 2:30PM in Mrs. Gerig’s room. Information about Regionals and the State Business Leadership Conference will be announced, so please attend this meeting. Hope to see you there! 

 

The AWARE Club is taking new members to begin the spring campaign to Stop the Trafficking Of People.  Come join the AWARE Club in room 156 on Wednesdays at 2:30.  We are looking for fresh ideas so come join the AWARE Campaign!

 

Ever want to be someone else for a day? Writing makes that possible. Come join in an hour of writing-related fun and talk with the McNary Flash Fiction Club. To be included in the book the club produces at the end of the year, you should start now.  The next meeting is TODAY in Mrs. Stefani’s room.

 

For all junior girls, there will be an informational meeting on February 12that 7 pm in the Library about Keizer’s Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship Program. It is free to participate and it looks great on those college applications. Please bring a parent or guardian to the meeting and we hope to see you there.

 

Anyone interested in participating in a spring sport may stop by the main office and see Heather for their paperwork. Spring sports include boys and girls tennis, boys and girls track and field, boys and girls golf, baseball, and softball. All athletes must pick up a packet and turn it in by February 22nd in order to begin spring practice on February 25th. No paperwork, no practice!

 

Boys Tennis team meeting will be Wednesday the 13th in the West Gym starting at 2:30.  Boys, this is a no-cut sport, so if you’ve ever been interested in tennis, stop by the meeting. If you can’t make it, contact coach Reid in the cafeteria in the mornings, or talk to Ms. Latham in the office.

 

Any girl's interested in golf need to go to a pre-season meeting on February 12th at 2:30 in the west gym.

 

The McNary Talent Show is coming up on March 1st so be sure to save the date on your calendar.  This is an exciting night of performance with a big prize at the end.  It starts at 7:00 so be sure to come early and get a good seat to cheer on your favorite act.
