This current 2018-2019 football season is one of the hardest the McNary Celtics have faced in the past few years. This football season they are facing five of the top ten football teams. These teams are South Medford, Tualatin, Tumwater, West Linn, Bend, and West Salem. These teams are widely known for being top contenders for a state championship every year.
Head Coach, Mr. Jeff Auvinen, gave his input about the strength of the schedule. “We’re playing a quality opponent every week.” With these top teams playing the Celts it is testing the physical and mental strength of the team. The Celts as a team have been trying to do what they want to, but have not yet been able to. “Our competition is making it tough to run our gameplan.”
The McNary Celtics have been trying to find the positives of these huge losses versus some of the top opponents. The smallest deficit they have lost to has been 28 and every team they have played has scored 50 points or more. With this all happening, the morale of the Celts has been pretty low.
“Playing as a team and trusting the person next to you.” said Ian Koeing, Senior at Mcnary and offensive guard for the team. Another big challenge on the team is how young the team is. “Some of our players aren’t exactly Varsity players… [it] take[s] time for trust to come.” Auvinen gave his input, “[McNary’s] biggest challenge [is] facing adversity. We are missing the seniors quite a bit this year.”
With these games the Celts had to reflect on what they have to work on. “Driving our feet on tackles…we’re letting them get 40-50 yard runs on us. We need to make big stops.” Koeing said. “We need to learn to compete and learn to bounce back when things don’t go your way.” Coach Auvinen said, “We need to get tougher physically and emotionally.”
The Celts are hoping for all of these things to come true and start to have some good fortune finishing the season off.
To start off the year they played North Medford who is one of the bigger teams. They are ranked 24 in the state. McNary ended up losing 55-27. Following loses to West Linn, Tualatin, Tumwater, and South Medford. They have yet to find their stride and are hoping for a win this week against one of the worst teams in the state, Sprague high school.
This McNary Celtics season is really gonna test what the Celts are made of. After these big games they have a couple more tough games but are hoping for wins against some other big time opponents.
McNary has an upcoming game this week against Sprague at home.
