2019 McNary Graduation Information
January 23, 2020 By:Ashley Gruber
Dear McNary Families,
Happy New Year (and decade)! I am writing to share with you some exciting news regarding McNary’s continued growth and improvement with our graduation rate data. Every year in January, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) releases the official graduation rate of all high schools in the state. The calculation for determining a four-year graduation rate involves tracking every student that enrolled at McNary over a four-year period and earned a high school diploma. Students that enroll at McNary but leave prior to graduation are included in the cohort unless they enroll at another school.
The graduation rate for the class of 2019 was 90.78% which is the highest rate in years and the second highest in the district. To put this in perspective, to the left are the graduation rates from McNary over the past decade. What isn’t noted is that McNary is a full 11% percent above the state average as well.
When examining our continued improvement in helping students successfully graduate from high school, there are a few indicators that we can point to for our upward trajectory. We know that when McNary students are involved in a club, sport, or some type of extra-curricular activity they are extremely likely to graduate on time. Additionally, these students have a very high probability of earning some of the millions of dollars in scholarships offered to our graduates each year. The graduating class of 2019 earned $9.4 million in scholarships, up a million dollars from the previous year.
Virtually all of McNary’s teachers have been AVID trained and our school is on the cusp of being validated as a National Demonstration School. This goal was set in 2015 and our staff and students have been working diligently to achieve this high standard every year since. Your kids have caring and hard-working teachers that use strategies to engage them through rigorous content and well-designed instruction strategies. We intentionally focus on improving students thinking and organizational skills by designing lessons and providing a framework for reading, writing, and collaboration.
Our mission statement at McNary is to be “Bold Enough to be the Best at Educating, Nurturing, and Inspiring.” While graduation rates are just one metric, it is a significant one and is a very strong measure of our pursuit to be a World-Class High School. We are proud of our progress and know that these gains will continue with our families continued support. McNary’s partnership with the community of Keizer is outstanding and we are excited about what the next decade of growth has in store.
Thanks for your continued support of McNary High School. Our success is your success.
